Calculation of the Ostriker - Vishniac Effect in Cold Dark Matter Models ∗ Andrew

چکیده
We present a new derivation of the cosmic microwave background anisotropy spectrum from the Ostriker-Vishniac effect for an open, flat, or closed Universe, and calculate the anisotropy expected in cold dark-matter (CDM) models. We provide simple semi-analytic fitting formulas for the Vishniac power spectrum that can be used to evaluate the expected anisotropy in CDM models for any arbitrary ionization history. In a flat Universe, CDM models normalized to cluster abundances produce rms temperature anisotropies of 0.8–2.4 μK on arcminute angular scales for a constant ionization fraction of unity, whereas an ionization fraction of 0.2 yields rms anisotropies of 0.3–0.8 μK. In an open and/or high-baryon-density Universe, the level of anisotropy is somewhat higher. The signal in some of these models may be detectable with planned interferometry experiments. The damping of the acoustic peaks in the primary-anisotropy spectrum at degree angular scales depends primarily on the optical depth and only secondarily on the epoch of reionization. On the other hand, the amplitude of Ostriker-Vishniac anisotropies depends sensitively on the epoch of reionization. Therefore, when combined with the estimate of the reionization optical depth provided by maps of degree-scale ∗This work is dedicated to the memory of David Schramm. †[email protected] ‡[email protected]

Calculation of the Ostriker-Vishniac effect in cold dark matter models
We present a new derivation of the cosmic microwave background anisotropy spectrum from the OstrikerVishniac effect for an open, flat, or closed universe, and calculate the anisotropy expected in cold dark matter ~CDM! models. We provide simple semi-analytic fitting formulas for the Vishniac power spectrum that can be used to evaluate the expected anisotropy in CDM models for any arbitrary ioni...
متن کامل0 Is There a Detectable Vishniac Effect ? Evan Scannapieco
The dominant linear contribution to cosmic microwave background (CMB) fluctuations at small angular scales (∼< 1) is a second-order contribution known as the Vishniac or Ostriker-Vishniac effect. This effect is caused by the scattering of CMB photons off free electrons after the universe has been reionized, and is dominated by linear perturbations near the RV = 2 Mpc/(hΓ/0.2) scale in the Cold ...
متن کاملA&a Manuscript No. ?? Cmb Anisotropies in the Weak Coupling Limit
We present a new, more powerful and accurate , analytic treatment of cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies in the weakly coupled regime. Three applications are presented: gravitational redshifts in a time dependent potential, the Doppler eeect in reionized scenarios, and the Vishniac eeect. The Vishniac eeect can dominate primary anisotropies at small angles even in late and minimally ...
متن کاملA closer look at CMB constraints on WIMP dark matter
We use Cosmic Microwave Background data from the WMAP, SPT, BICEP, and QUaD experiments to obtain constraints on the dark matter particle mass mχ, and show that the combined data requires mχ > 7.6 GeV at the 95% confidence level for the χχ→ bb̄ channel assuming s−wave annihilation and a thermal cross section 〈σav〉 = 3× 10−26 cm3/s. We examine whether the bound on mχ is sensitive to σ8 measuremen...
متن کاملObserving high redshift galaxy clusters through lensing of the Ostriker - Vishniac effect
In this paper we study the possibility of detecting lensing signals in high-resolution and high-sensitivity CMB experiments. At scales below 1 arcmin, the CMB background is dominated by the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect in clusters and by Ostriker-Vishniac effect distortions elsewhere. Assuming the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich component in clusters can be removed, we focus on the Ostriker-Vishniac effect and...
